Strong Grip. Wrong Energy.

The other day, I tried a yoga-like balance position.
First with my eyes open, then closed.

Two things hit me hard.

First insight:
With eyes open, balance came easily. The moment I closed them, I lost it instantly.
So, I focused on a spot, memorized it, and then projected it with my eyes closed. My balance returned—at least until my mind wandered. The moment I lost focus, so did my balance.

Second insight:
With eyes closed, my body was swinging and shaky. If I stayed like that, I would’ve fallen. Then I touched the kitchen counter with just the tip of my finger. Almost invisible, almost nothing. But that subtle touch made me steady again. Balance returned.

And that’s when it clicked:
Most of the time, we don’t need a firm grip.

“We need a gentle touch. But in the right place, at the right moment.”

In leadership, I see this all the time.

High performers often cling to anchors—processes, routines, or control mechanisms—that consume all their energy. They hold on too tight.
But what actually shifts the game is not the strongest grip. It’s the lightest touch, directed precisely where it’s needed most.

That’s the magic of coaching:
A small shift in energy. A single subtle intervention.
And suddenly, the balance feels effortless.

Reflection for Leaders

  • Where in your leadership are you holding on too tight?
  • If you loosened your grip and redirected that energy, where could it create the biggest impact?
